Gutter Guards vs. Repeat Cleaning: The 5-Year Math

Under New England canopy, open gutters are a subscription. The question is whether five years of that subscription costs more than cancelling it once.

The Subscription Nobody Signed Up For

A home under mature oaks and maples fills its gutters twice a year — spring seeds, fall leaves — every year, indefinitely. At typical Boston-area service rates, that's ten professional visits over five years, roughly $1,500–$2,500 depending on home size and height. Skip visits and the cost doesn't disappear; it converts into overflow, ice load, and eventually fascia work at multiples of the cleaning price.

The One-Time Alternative

Professionally installed micro-mesh guards run $4–$11 per linear foot (Angi, Boston-area, 2026) — for a typical 150-foot home, roughly $600–$1,650 installed once. Quality micro-mesh sheds the seed-and-leaf load that fills open troughs, cutting the twice-a-year interior clean-out to an occasional surface brushing.

The Line Items Neither Invoice Shows

  • Storm timing — cleanings are scheduled; storms aren't. Gutters clog on the calendar's schedule between visits, and Boston's wettest months (December, March) sit right after leaf season. Guards work mid-storm; a cleaning booked for next Tuesday doesn't.
  • Ice load — debris left over winter freezes into mass that strains hangers and anchors ice dams. Guards keep the trough empty going into the freeze.
  • The cheap-guard trap — foam and brush guards flip the math backwards: real money spent, cleaning still required, removal eventually added. If it isn't rigid micro-mesh or a proper surface-tension system, it's a delay, not a solution.

Where Cleaning Still Wins

Light canopy, simple single-story rooflines, or short ownership horizons — if the five-year total is two or three visits, the guard install doesn't pay back. The math favors guards precisely where the subscription is most expensive: tall homes, heavy trees, long holds. Which describes a great deal of the South Shore.
